for i will CEASE to exist 2024
wood, glass, ash

I find the process of mould making and casting analogous to human relationships—creating impressions, leaving traces, alteration and transformation as a result of coexistence. In this work, I aim to provoke thought on these dynamics. Using logs as moulds for shaping glass, I engage in a process where molten glass is inflated and placed on the logs, slumping into their crevices and curves. As the glass takes shape, it imprints itself while simultaneously burning and deteriorating the wood beneath.

This tension between the glass and the logs is central to this work. In this work I emphasise the destructive relationship between the cast object and its mould. The more the glass inflates and contacts the logs, the more the wood is damaged—a process highlighting the sacrifice inherent in creation.

Through this tension, I challenge the idea of coexistence when it entails destruction. I invite the viewer to reflect on the ethical implications of relationships where one entity's survival or expansion comes at the expense of another. By highlighting the harm inflicted in the process, I question whether coexistence is truly justifiable when it demands such a cost. This piece is a call to consider the moral responsibility we have in our interactions and the impact our existence can have on others.

This work was created in collaboration with Marcus Dillon. I would like to extend my gratitude to Marcus, without whom this piece would not have been possible. Thank you for your incredible glassblowing expertise, your ongoing support, and the mentorship.
